The Three Stooges

Joe checks to see if the Farrely Brothers can do an adaptation of one of his favorite comedy teams of all time.

Short Review: The Three Stooges is a mess. It is incredibly unfunny, which for a movie about the Three Stooges is just about a cardinal sin in my book. Even Moe slapping' around the Jersey Shore cast is funny, so much as surreal. The story is clique and not even handled very well. Go check out the older movies and skip this movie.

Video Review:

What you will Like:

  1. The stooges are at least trying...kinda.

What you will Hate:

  1. Everything else is a complete mess.
  2. TOO MANY MODERN CULTURAL REFERENCES!!!!

Final Score: Skip This Movie

The Hunger Games

Joe checks out the hyped up adaptation to Suzanne Collin's bestselling novel, The Hunger Games.

Short Review: The Hunger Games is a very good adaptation. It is a little disturbing at some points, particularly when the game itself starts. The movie is highly engaging and has one of the best climaxes I have seen in a movie all year. This is a dark movie, based on a dark book. I think this movie deserves a place right next to Harry Potter.

Video Review:

What you will like:

  1. This is a great adaptation, compared to some of the recent films (e.g. Twilight, The Last Airbender).
  2. Extremely action-packed, has incredibly well designed and emotional fight sequences.
  3. The actors are extremely good.
  4. Incredibly engaging.

What you will hate:

  1. The romance is VERY forced.
  2. This movie runs a little too long.
  3. EVERYONE is a jerk.

Final Score: Must Own!!!

Legend of Korra Premiere

The spin-off  of the best American anime in history gets the CiR treatment. Is it as good as the original.. or as bad as the movie. We examine the early premiere of The Legend of Korra.

Short Review: The Legend of Korra is just as good as the original series. It has all the heart of the original, but a style that is all it's own. It may be a bit disconcerting being reintroduced into this world 70 years later, but the series is extremely gentle in showing us without necessarily holding our hands. If you are fan of the show (who isn't) there is no reason not to see this show.

Video Review:

What you will like:

  1. This has all the awesomeness of the original series.
  2. It is the reintroduction of the Avatar world, but is entirely new.
  3. It's incredibly funny, just like the original.
  4. It's not M. Night Shyamalan's horrible adaptation.

What you will hate:

  1. It ends.

Final Score: Must Own!!! (when it comes out)

The Lorax

In the first episode of Cinema in Review, Joe takes a look at the adaptation of his favorite Dr. Suess book, The Lorax. Is it a soaring swamy swan, or a big ol' steaming pile of gloppity glop.

Short Review: The Lorax is an excellent adaptation, with a lot of heart. It is well animated and some scenes are incredibly funny. However, it does squander some of the integrity of the story in exchange for cheap laughs and unnecessary songs. Worth a look, but nothing special.

Video Review:

What you will like:

  1. The heart and message of the original story are portrayed very faithfully.
  2. "How Bad Can I Be"
  3. The animation is very beautiful, its top quality.

What you will hate:

  1. A LOT of jokes are very bad puns.
  2. Too many overly cutesy sell-out characters.
  3. Most songs are completely unnecessary.
  4. The heart and integrity is compromised sometimes by corporate funding.

Final ScoreCheck It Out.
